CLINTON— The year: 1965.
Wales native Tom Jones becomes an instant U.S. hit after performing on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”
Fast forward to 2000, when he sings at the White House at the invitation of President Clinton.
The following year, Jones sings for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for her Golden Jubilee.
And next? Clinton Town Hall on April 26.
Well, sort of.
Irv Cass, who made a big splash at last year’s Clinton Police Relief Association’s benefit show as Elvis, has added Tom Jones to his repertoire.
The new impersonation was just added six months ago, he said.
“I get mixed reactions to that,” the ebullient Mr. Cass said yesterday from his Michigan home. “And I’ll tell you why I added Tom Jones — I like the range and power of his voice, and, really, who wants to see an old Elvis impersonator? No one wants to see an old, or a big, fat Elvis — unless it’s a joke — and his fans do not find that funny. Elvis is not to be made a joke of.”
Mr. Cass, who has been doing Elvis tribute shows for 15 years, plans to do two sets as the King and one as Tom Jones, who, by the way, is now Sir Tom Jones, having been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006.
Presley and Jones were friends, according to the official Tom Jones Web site, and Mr. Cass pointed out that Sir Tom was one of the only celebrities Elvis cared to hang out with in star-studded Las Vegas.
“Elvis would go see Tom Jones, and he didn’t usually do that kind of thing. He’d even jump up on the stage with Tom every once and awhile,” Mr. Cass said.
The Clinton show, he promises, will be family friendly, although Mr. Cass acknowledged that Elvis was a bit more subtle in his sexuality than Jones is.
Which makes the Jones addition all the better for Mr. Cass, who began his show-biz career as a dancer with the popular all-male Chippendales — well-known to the ladies — and with a similar group in Canada.
