Subject: ELVIS DOES LAS VEGAS Wed May 28, 2008 8:49 am
For a month in August, 1969 Elvis performed fifty seven shows over four weeks in the city's biggest showroom at the just completed International Hotel. Rock and roll musicians, an orchestra, a male gospel back-up group, and a black female soul/gospel back-up group is put together for his show. Elvis is very human and sharing with the audiences as he recollects his career with them. His shows were a delightful mix of the new and the old hits. Elvis returned to the Las Vegas International Hotel in January 1970 for another month long engagement and broke his own attendance records. The live album "ON STAGE" is recorded.
In 1970, Elvis heads back to Las Vegas for rehearsals for another month long engagement at the International Hotel. He opens on August 10. MGM shoots a documentary film called "Elvis -That’s the Way It Is" that will show Elvis in a real "behind the scenes". A year later in August, 1971 Elvis plays an engagement in Las Vegas at the International Hotel, now the Las Vegas Hilton International Hotel. He sets bigger attendance records and tops himself once again.
