Quickie weddings will take on a whole new meaning for love birds in Sweden next month. In a recent report by Reuters on Thursday, The Church of Sweden will marry couples in a drive-in ceremony that will take a mere seven minutes at a car rally in July. The goal is to make marriages “more accessible.”
Soaring gas prices aside, 36 couples have decided to take the auto-plunge and have applied to get hitched at the gathering in in Vasteras in central Sweden. According to priest Jerker Asterlund, the scheme’s initiator, “Weddings are getting more and more commercialized and that is not something we have any interest in. We would like to make things simpler and more down to earth when people take the plunge and get married.”
Asterlund continues, “This is not just for fun, but also a way for the Church of Sweden to show we can take part in celebration and happiness and not just in crisis and catastrophes.” Car enthusiasts who will attend a motor show of classic cars from the 1950s and 1960s will be able to join in the couples’ wedded bliss and watch on as 10 priests conduct the drive-in marriage ceremonies.
There will be only one reason why couples will need to get out of the car–to cut the rug for their first dance. The music will be provided by a gospel choir and the traditional Elvis soundtrack sung by the priest himself. The Elvis songs are an added touch to make the occasion more like that famous Las Vegas ceremonies of quickie weddings past.
“We have added a bit of a Las Vegas touch to it and put up a huge red, neon sign which reads ‘Get Married’ so one can see it from afar and know where to turn off.”
