- An interview with Chips Moman, the Producer of the classic 1969 Memphis Sessions. In this interesting unpublished interview Arjan Deelen asks, "Can you remember what you were doing when you heard of Elvis' death?" Chips Moman: We were doing an album on Joe Tex in Nashville when Elvis died, and I remember that Dan Penn came in, and he had tears rolling down his eyes. He said, "Man, Elvis just died". I'll tell you, that was the day the music died.

It was like somebody hit you in the stomach, and it also left you with a distraught feeling, because it was unnecessary. That was the worst of it all. There wasn't a human being around him that would ever tell him, "Don't do that". No one would ever tell him anything the way I told him. He was so controlled by Tom Parker. Tom Parker would tell him no, but no one else. That's sad. To me, the reason that he didn't have a lot of hits anymore is the same reason that he died. Because nobody would say anything."
