Clash as fans fight at European Elvis Championships
AN ELVIS fan was left All Shook Up and nursing a broken nose and cheekbone after a convention for the King ended in a scuffle at a Birmingham hotel. Police were called to the lobby of the Hilton Metropole at the NEC in the early hours of Sunday after reports that a guest was bleeding in the lobby.
A 43-year-old man was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and a 48-year-old was recovering from his injuries in hospital. Sources said neither man was local and both had attended the European Elvis Championships, which featured 80 Elvis impersonators last weekend. It was not clear what sparked the fracas.
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: Police were called at 4.25am on January 9 to reports of a man bleeding in the lobby area of the Hilton Metropole Hotel at the NEC. A 48-year-old man was taken to Heartlands Hospital with a broken cheekbone, a broken nose and cuts to his face. He remains in a stable condition at the hospital.
A 43-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of assault and has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The man has been bailed.
A spokesman for the Hilton hotel chain said: We can confirm police were called following an alleged assault which took place at the hotel in the early hours of Sunday. The well-being, safety and security of our guests are of paramount importance to us and the hotels security team immediately alerted the police and emergency services to the situation. This matter is now in the hands of the police for further investigation.
Earlier, on stage, the novice section of the weekend competition was won by a seven-year-old boy from Leamington Spa.
Sylvain Saint-Simon won with his rendition of Burning Love in front of a crowd of 500. The youngster became hooked on Elvis when he saw one of the singers films aged just three and now spends up to four hours every day practising his singing and moves.
His mum, Sharon Murphy, said: We think hes fantastic so it was great to hear an audience go wild for him. Gordon Hendricks won the main event, which coincided with what would have been Presleys 76th birthday.
The 39-year-old, from Stoke-on-Trent, received s3,000 and will perform at the Kings Graceland home later this year.
Thankfully they have not named any names and it makes it sound like a scuffle.
